The Big Island is Hawaii's largest Island at 4038 square miles —twice the size of all the other Hawaiian Islands combined!

Getting The Lei of the Land

The Big Island is Hawaii's largest Island. At 4,038 square miles, it is twice the size of all other Hawaiian Islands combined. The island is divided in two main areas of interest: the west side, home of Kailua-Kona village (often just called Kona), and the east side, known as Hilo.

Kona is known as the ‘dry’ side of the island. With warm tropical breezes, turquoise waters, and golden sands, Kona offers something for everyone. Hilo is characterized by a tropical rainforest climate with substantial rainfall throughout the year. The town of Hilo overlooks Hilo bay, which is situated on two shield volcanoes: the Mauna Loa (active) and the Mauna Kea (dormant).

Kailua-Kona boasts temperatures in the 80s year round and only 12 inches of rainfall!

The Town We Call Home

Kailua is a town in the district of North Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. The post office designated it as Kailua-Kona to differentiate it from the larger Kailua located on windward Oahu. Most often referred to as Kona, the town is the center of commerce and of the tourist industry on West Hawaii. It's also your gateway to the Big Island of Hawaii with Keahole International Airport offering direct flights to and from the mainland, as well as the other Hawaiian Islands.

The Kona community was established by King Kamehameha, and chosen as the first seat of his government. The town is located along the shoreline of Kailua Bay and up the southern slope of Hualapai volcano.

Kona has a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round. The coldest month in Kona is January with an average high of 81.9°F. August is the warmest month with an average high of 88.0°F. Humidity is generally between 50% and 70%. Kona is generally dry, with a mean annual precipitation of less than 12 inches. Kona storms (also called Kona lows) are a type of seasonal cyclone in the Hawaiian Islands, usually formed in the winter from winds coming from the westerly Kona (normally leeward) direction. Hawaii typically experiences two to three of these storms annually, which can affect the state for a week or more.

Iron Man Triathalon competition on the Big Island of Hawaii

Kailua is the start and finish of the annual Ironman World Championship triathlon, the annual Kona Coffee Festival, and the Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament. The Ironman World Championship has been held annually in Hawaii since 1978, with an additional race in 1982. It is owned and organized by the World Triathlon Corporation. It is the annual culmination of a series of Ironman triathlon qualification races held throughout the world.

Mark Twain described Hawaii as "the loveliest fleet of islands that lies anchored in any ocean."
